Hello, friend! If you’ve figured out anything about me yet, you may have figured out that when I have a question and decide to research something, I share it with YOU! So on that note, I have had this question in my mind for a while: Does CLA help with weight loss? I used this supplement YEARS ago, and I THINK it helped, but I needed a refresher because I could not remember why. I guess I should start by explaining exactly WHAT “CLA” is!
CLA is an abbreviation for Conjugated Linoleic Acid, which is a slightly altered form of linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 fatty acid important to our health. Omega-6 fatty acids come mainly from dairy and meat, which also means that CLA is primarily found in dairy and meat. In 1988 a University of Wisconsin researcher discovered that CLA is a potent anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogen, and anti-catabolite, as well as a powerful immune system enhancer. Studies have also gone as far as to say that some additional traits of CLA are assistance in fat burning, building and retention of lean muscle, and fighting cancer.
So now that we know what CLA is, can CLA help with weight loss? A study published in the “Journal of International Medical Research” states that participants who took CLA experienced a moderate weight reduction in comparison to those who took a placebo. However, the numbers show that this amount is actually rather small; the difference between the CLA group and the placebo group is just 1.5 pounds. This could be explained by any number of factors and does not indicate that CLA was the main factor in the weight loss. So while CLA may have a minor weight loss benefit, it will not help you lose weight by itself and must be paired with proper diet and exercise.
As always, please speak with your doctor before beginning any new supplement such as CLA.
