Happy Tuesday, friends! Get excited! I have a guest post for you today about daily detoxing tips. <3

daily detox tips

Hi everyone, I am so excited that Whitney has asked me to give you all some great tips for this new year with all of us probably hoping and aiming to improve our health!

With it being the new year and all we are all starting our New Year Resolutions proudly as we embark on a new you in the new year. So many of us love the idea of starting a new, and sometimes we just need a boost or a reason, and the time old tradition of setting New Year’s Resolutions is the perfect thing to kick us into something better…

One of the top (if not the top) resolution people make is to lose weight. Other popular ones are to eat healthier, and exercise more. While these all can go hand in hand, one of the things that typically gets associated with losing weight is doing some kind of detox or cleanse…and while I am someone who loves to detox/cleanse, there are absolutely ways to do this positively, and also negatively.

I want to give you some simple effective daily detox tips that can help you detoxify your body and help you on your path to a healthier year. There are many detox diets out there, juicing, fasting and the master cleanse all fall into this category, I have some different ideas!

Drink Warm Lemon Water Daily
Specifically when you wake up in the morning, enjoy a glass of warm lemon water. Most people wake up dehydrated and many of us (myself included sometimes) go to put coffee in our bodies first. This is a big no-no. We want to begin our day with something alkalinizing and hydrating, lemon water is the perfect drink in the morning. Lemon is very alkalizing, meaning that although it is acidic in our mouths, it is alkaline in the body, helping to balance our pH. Lemon is also cleansing to the liver. During the night when we sleep our liver is able to detoxify compounds in our bodies through a series of biochemical reactions, giving our livers some love with a daily lemon water drink helps to flush out the toxins it is trying to remove and clean, whereas coffee puts more work on the liver, preventing it from properly cleansing the body.

Go Crazy With Green Foods
Choose green at each and every meal and your body will thank you! I love a green smoothie in the morning, but sauteed greens with eggs also works. Make a big salad for lunch and roast from broccoli and green beans at dinner. Green vegetables contain chlorophyll, which can be likened to blood in the human body. Chlorophyll is so cleansing and helps to purify and alkalinize the body as well. Eating more green vegetables helps to boost the nutrients in our diet too, more nutrients means more active enzymes, the proteins that do work in the body, and more enzymes means more detoxification! If you want to supercharge the green vegetable detox, choose vegetables from the cruciferous family, including broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts, these have sulfur which is critical in supporting the liver.

Dry Brush
Have you heard of dry brushing? You use a natural fiber brush and gently brush your skin, starting from your toes going towards your heart. Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system and it gently invigorates the body sloughing off dry and dead skin cells allowing for new growth and removal of toxins. The skin is the bodies largest organ and keeping it healthy is a great means to detoxify the body. You can dry brush before a shower or bath.

Breathe Deep
Take a moment to breathe deeply, this helps to oxygenate the bodies cells. So often we breathe shallow, not fully giving our bodies the oxygen it needs. Our bodies are designed to work at the capacity we enable it to, meaning that if we only give it partial oxygen by breathing shallow, we can never achieve optimal health. Exhaling is one of the primary ways our body removes toxins, otherwise we would not live having so much carbon dioxide in our blood. Take 5 minutes each day to really breathe deep. Breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 3 seconds, and then exhale slower than you inhaled!

Drink Herbal Teas
Herbal teas can offer more than just a tasty treat any time of the day. There are lots of health benefits to drinking herbal teas, and certain teas can be very therapeutic! Herbal teas also count at the water you drink because they are completely caffeine free (for the most part!). Nettle, Dandelion, Peppermint and Chamomile are some of my favourites, but you can also pick up a blended herbal tea for a specific ailment you’re working to remedy. Peppermint or ginger tea is great to improve digestion and dandelion root tea is a wonderful tonic to help detoxify the liver.

With all of that said the best way to start reaching your health goals this new year is to start removing the bad and consuming the good! Focus on colourful, natural foods that are found in nature like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, quality protein and other natural health products.

What New Year Resolutions do you have? Are you planning to add some daily detoxing tips into your goals in 2015?

Great easily do-able suggestions – I love that! I’ve been starting my mornings with lemon water and find that was an easy switch that I’m really enjoying. I also love that my CSA does a yearly thing at the beginning of the year and offers an extra jumbo box of local veggies and fruits to get the year started off on an easy lean-into-healthy high note.
